Takodana Castle Patrons (Maz’s Castle)

Here you will find my best effort to draw and record every single character and creature that appears in Maz Kanata’s castle on Takodana in Star Wars Episode VII: The Force Awakens. This started as a fun project I expected to be complete rather quickly. However, the more I watched footage from the scene, and the more I looked at behind the scenes photos, I realized there are way more characters than you might expect. My final count of the full cast in Maz’s castle is 97! This project started on ~April 23, 2016 and ended (after many, many extensive breaks) July 11, 2021.

Below is the artwork I created, a table of all of the characters, some additional fun facts about the process, and the resources I used to work on this. Click here to see basically all of the reference I used throughout the process.

And yes, it looks tiny at first glance due to the absurd aspect ratio.

Other Thoughts

My biggest regret for this project is that I never saw what creature the guy with square binoculars at the gambling table had. If you look closely you see that he has a leash trailing behind him. It is very likely Izby but I cannot be sure.

There is a shadow woman taking a drink you can barely spot at some point, but I just had no other appearances and not enough info to go on, so I ultimately left her out. I am 50% sure it is a unique character, but it's too hard to tell.

A certain facebook group (Star Wars Sourcebooks) was immensely helpful! They had done a ton of work circling characters in screenshots and naming them. Their efforts were instrumental.

You may notice that I list two Delphians (not including Sidon Ithano) in this list. Well it turns out the same Delphian appears twice in one scene! You can see him during the initial camera walkthrough of the bar sitting down in the right side of the frame and then also walking around on the left of the scene.

Another resource that was instrumental was the LEGO Star Wars Episode VII game. They named many characters which appear in the bar.

Drawing every character was a really fun process which became nightmarish when I realized I probably needed a background/environment to display everyone in to really do it right. Adding a border around each character was the secret sauce which helped everything fall into place and prevent certain characters from disappearing into the shadows. Shout out to Photoshop and Aseprite.

I hope that anyone who is as big of a Star Wars nerd as myself finds these resources helpful. I am confident that this is the most comprehensive list of characters that appear in the film as of this posting.
